CarbonCure Adds Global Engineering and Sustainability Leaders to Board, CEO Named as Chair
Canadian cleantech company adds retired AECOM CEO and former World Green Building Council chair to its board of directors and appoints CarbonCure CEO as chair
HALIFAX, NS, July 16, 2021 — CarbonCure Technologies, a Canadian company that develops carbon dioxide removal solutions for the concrete industry, has added two new members to its board of directors: Lisa Bate, Global Sustainability Lead and Senior Principal of B+H Architects and former chair of the World Green Building Council, and Michael S. Burke, retired chair and CEO of AECOM. CarbonCure has also appointed its founder and CEO, Robert Niven, as chair of the board.
Bate is the immediate past chair of the World Green Building Council Board, where she focused on climate action and key initiatives around net zero carbon, embodied carbon, health and wellbeing, and the circular economy.
“Since buildings are the source of about 40 percent of the world’s annual greenhouse gas emissions, the global construction industry faces an urgent and immense challenge to rapidly adopt low-carbon and circular products in order to remain competitive in the new green economy. I’m excited to shape the strategic direction of CarbonCure to seize this global opportunity of fulfilling the demands of sustainable construction,” said Bate.
Burke is the recently retired chair and CEO of AECOM, a fully integrated infrastructure firm that designs, builds, finances and operates infrastructure assets in more than 150 countries with more than 87,000 employees.
“As the effects of the climate crisis grow and policymakers put historic investments into infrastructure, it’s essential that we integrate new carbon dioxide removal innovations to decarbonize the construction industry,” said Burke. “I am looking forward to advising CarbonCure management as they scale the business globally and transform concrete into a climate solution.”
CarbonCure was established in Nova Scotia in 2012 by its CEO and newly appointed chair of the board, Robert Niven. Today, the company’s innovative concrete solutions are used by more than 400 concrete plants in 13 countries. The company is on a mission to reduce and remove embodied carbon from the built environment by 500 million tonnes annually by 2030.
